Living in Cannes: A Year-Round Resident's Guide
Beyond the festival fortnight — what life is really like in Cannes across the four seasons, neighbourhoods, schools and daily rhythm.
Cannes is two cities. For two weeks in May, it is a global stage. The other fifty weeks, it is a quiet, well-organised Mediterranean town of 75,000 residents with a real school system, a working fishing port, and a year-round community of long-term Northern European and French families. The trick to choosing Cannes is understanding the off-season — because that is what 96% of your year will look like.
The Four Seasons of Cannes
Winter (Dec–Feb): mild, 14–16°C daytime highs, blue skies most weeks. Cafés stay open, the Croisette is yours to walk. Spring (Mar–May): the city wakes — markets fill, the festival builds. Summer (Jun–Aug): hot, crowded, expensive — many residents leave town for the back-country or the Italian Riviera. Autumn (Sep–Nov): the locals' favourite — warm sea, empty beaches, restaurant terraces open until November.
Neighbourhoods for Residents (not investors)
La Californie — hillside, gated villas, family-quiet, 10 minutes to the centre. Le Suquet — old town, narrow streets, character, best for couples and creatives. Carnot / Petit Juas — Haussmannian apartments, walkable, the genuine residential heart. Pointe Croisette — modern apartments with sea views, weekend-home feel. Mougins (15 min inland) — the family belt: schools, golf, Provençal villages, quieter pace.
Schools, Healthcare, Daily Logistics
International schools: Mougins School (British, 3–18), International School of Nice (IB, 30 min), Centre International de Valbonne (French + sections internationales). Healthcare: Hôpital de Cannes (public) plus a dense network of specialists; concierge services like Riviera Medical Group are standard for international families. Nice airport: 25 minutes, 200+ direct destinations. Train to Paris: 5h25 by TGV, daily flights every 90 minutes.
The Honest Trade-offs
Pros: climate, infrastructure, year-round social life, top-decile healthcare, no language barrier in the international circle. Cons: parking is painful, summer traffic is real, restaurant prices have crept up post-2020, and the city is more curated than spontaneous. If you want laid-back, choose Antibes. If you want quiet, choose Mougins. If you want urban energy in a beach town, choose Cannes.
