Emerytura na Algarve
Dlaczego Algarve pozostaje najpopularniejszym kierunkiem emerytalnym Europy.

The Algarve has retired more North-Europeans than any other Mediterranean region — and the reason is not weather alone. It is the combination of 300 sunny days, top-decile healthcare (public and private), a 50-year-old expatriate infrastructure (English-speaking notaries, doctors, golf clubs, supermarkets), and a moderate cost base. The 2024 reform of the NHR regime tightened the tax case but did not break it.
Where to Retire: Three Distinct Algarves
Western Algarve (Lagos, Sagres, Burgau) — dramatic cliffs, surfing community, younger retiree crowd, smaller towns. Central / Golden Triangle (Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Almancil, Vilamoura) — the established expatriate heart: golf, international schools, private healthcare, marinas. Eastern Algarve (Tavira, Olhão, Cacela Velha) — flatter, slower, more Portuguese in character, lower prices, the choice of the second-wave retirees who arrived after 2018.
Healthcare: Public + Private
Public (SNS): excellent quality once registered, free at point of use for residents, 6–18 month waits for non-urgent specialists. Private: Hospital Particular do Algarve (Faro, Alvor), HPA Lusíadas — English-speaking, modern, €100–€250 consultations, no waiting lists. Most retirees hold both: SNS for hospital emergencies, private insurance (Médis, Multicare: €80–€180/month per person depending on age) for everything else.
Tax: NHR 2.0 and the IFICI Regime
The classic NHR closed to new applicants in 2024. The replacement IFICI (Incentivo Fiscal à Investigação Científica e Inovação) is narrower — designed for high-skill workers — and most pure retirees no longer qualify for sweeping tax breaks. However: ordinary Portuguese tax rates remain reasonable, Portugal has favourable double-tax treaties with the UK, Netherlands, Germany and France, and there is no wealth tax. For most retirees the decision now turns on lifestyle, not tax arbitrage.
Cost of Retirement: Realistic Numbers
A retired couple lives comfortably on €3,500–€5,500/month including private health insurance, a modest car, a daily lunch out, and a once-a-year long trip. Add €1,500–€3,000/month for a golf-club lifestyle in the Golden Triangle. Property service charges in branded resorts (Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo): €4,000–€10,000 per year. Energy bills are modest year-round thanks to the climate.
